ABOUT THE NATIONAL EYE CARE PROJECT

WHAT IT IS:

The National Eye Care Project (NECP) is a major public service outreach program that provides medical eye care for financially disadvantaged seniors. The project has helped  500,000 older Americans since 1986!

HOW IT WORKS:

Eligible callers to the toll-free Helpline are matched with one of 7,500 volunteer ophthalmologists nationwide. The physician provides a comprehensive medical eye examination and treatment for any condition diagnosed at the initial visit.

ELIGIBILITY:

Those who qualify are financially disadvantaged seniors age 65 and older who are U.S. citizens or legal residents and who have no access to an ophthalmologist (i.e. through an HMO or other prepaid health plan such as the armed forces or V A).

PAYMENT:

Volunteer ophthalmologists bill Medicare and private health insurance. For seniors without the means to pay, the fees for the examination and treatment are waived.

NOT COVERED:

Eyeglasses, prescriptions, hospital services and fees of other medical professionals are not covered.

FUNDING:

The Foundation of the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, Inc., support the NECP .
