Cryptic Masonry
and
Atherosclerosis

    The symbol above signifies the commitment of the Cryptic Masons International to support Atherosclerosis research.

    From a previous pamphlet and from a slide and tape show which many of you have seen, you already know the grim statistics of this dreaded disease.  Atherosclerosis and its complications, heart attacks and strokes account for 50% of all deaths occurring in the United States every year and millions of Americans with heart attacks and strokes crowd our hospitals at all times.

    The cost to society from atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries is now estimated at close to 40 billion dollars every year.  This includes hospitalization and treatment, loss of pay due to long illness or premature death, and the cost of keeping numerous elderly people in nursing homes for reasons of senility and other manifestations of hardening of the arteries. 

    Large sums of money are being spent by the federal government and other granting agencies researching diseases of the heart and blood vessels but, less than 4 cents of every dollar is spent on the root cause of most of these problems - atherosclerosis.

    Undoubtedly, federal government funding for research in health related
areas will decline in the years to come.  In times such as these, it is more
important than ever that private organizations step in and give a helping
hand to keep research progressing in vital areas.  

    It is our plan to support an all out  research effort to improve our understanding of the causes of atherosclerosis, their prevention and treatment. To achieve this goal, one must bring together scientists of many different talents and areas of expertise, for atherosclerosis is a problem with many different causes each of which can be investigated only by highly specialized research scientists.

    A research unit for the study of the causes of atherosclerosis has been
established in the setting of a large university medical school complex, the
Indiana University School of Medicine. Through our support a number of
young talented doctors have received their salaries enabling them to work full time with older, more experienced colleagues to better understand the
root causes of atherosclerosis. Thanks to the energy and dedication of these young individuals substantial progress has been made. 

    The money we spend supporting atherosclerosis research at Indiana
University School of Medicine will make an invaluable contribution
towards speeding up progress in basic research and the earlier achievements of practical solutions for the benefit of patients with atherosclerosis. With the money we donate, we can contribute
to establishing the prevention or the cure of this disease that affects millions
of Americans. 

    With a membership the size of ours, even a pledge of a dollar a year
from each of us would go a long way in support of atherosclerosis research.

Contributions may be deductible.

    Another method of making a meaningful contribution is through
your will.  With this particular philanthropy we can help not only our fellow
citizens; we can help ourselves. If research supported by our efforts
produces better methods for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, it could make a big difference to those of us who are certain to fall victim to a heart attack or stroke within the next several decades.
